Small repairs or a wall problem?
Small fixing holes, dents and local surface damage may fit a painting preparation scope. A crack that keeps returning, soft material or a damp patch needs its cause assessed before anyone promises a cosmetic repair.
Describe the damage and any history you know. You do not need to diagnose it. Ask the painter to identify work they can include and anything that requires another trade. If the paint itself is lifting, see peeling paint repair.
Texture and repaint boundaries
A repaired patch can differ from the surrounding wall in texture, sheen or color. Painting only the small repair may be reasonable where appearance is less important; repainting the full wall can provide a more consistent boundary.
The choice is not automatically the whole room. Consider the light, existing wear and where the wall meets a natural edge. Agree the expected result without a blanket promise that every repair will become invisible.

What happens before the finish coats

Ask how the contractor will handle exposed or damaged wall facing, stains and existing texture. The scope should describe the treatment rather than just “patch as needed.” Avoid scheduling finish coats around an assumed drying time that nobody has confirmed.

Use a short defect list to compare proposals:
